How to Use a Traditional Text Editor Instead of the Block Editor in WordPress

WordPress’s block editor (Gutenberg) makes it easy to create visually appealing content, but many of us still prefer the classic text editor. If you find the block-based interface unfamiliar or simply want to write and publish content quickly, here are some effective alternatives.

1. Use the Classic Editor Plugin

The easiest way to avoid the block editor is to install the Classic Editor plugin.
This plugin brings back the familiar single text box (WYSIWYG or text mode) from before WordPress 5.0.
Here’s how to set it up:

  • Plugins → Add New: Search for “Classic Editor”

  • Install and activate the plugin

  • Settings → Writing: Choose “Classic Editor” as the default editor

Now you can write posts just like you used to, without any blocks.

2. Use the Classic Block

If you have to use the block editor, you can still access a classic editor experience by using the Classic Block.
This block mimics the old editor within the block environment.

  • Add Block (+) → Search for “Classic” → Select Classic Block

3. Try the Advanced Editor Tools (formerly TinyMCE Advanced) Plugin

Advanced Editor Tools (previously TinyMCE Advanced) enhances the classic paragraph and classic block features.
It provides a familiar toolbar and extra editing options for those who prefer the classic editor.

  • Plugins → Add New: Search for “Advanced Editor Tools” or “TinyMCE Advanced”

  • Install and activate the plugin

4. Use an External Text Editor

You can also write your content in an external editor like Visual Studio Code and then paste it into WordPress.
This minimizes the use of block structures and lets you publish content quickly without dealing with complex block settings.

Final Thoughts

While the WordPress block editor can be convenient, I always recommend these alternatives for those who prefer the traditional text editor—especially if you’re creating content in multiple languages or want to publish quickly
